Course Numbers, Symbols, and Abbreviations

Course Numbers
0000-0999 Do not carry credit.
1xxx-3xxx For undergraduates; may not be applied to graduate programs.
4xxx Primarily for undergraduate students in their fourth year of study.
5xxx Primarily for graduate students but are also open to third and fourth year undergraduate students.
6xxx-7xxx For postbaccalaureate students in professional degree programs not offered through the Graduate School.
Note: 4xxx, 6xxx, and 7xxx courses may be applied toward a graduate degree with approval by the student's major field and if the course is taught by a member of the graduate faculty or an individual authorized by the program to teach at the graduate level.
8xxx For graduate students only.
Note: In connection with course numbers, disciplines and programs are identified by a two-, three-, or four-letter desigator prefix (e.g., CE for Civil Engineering, Pol for Political Science, WoSt for Women's Studies).
Abbr /eviations and Symbols
H Honors. Courses with an H following the course number satisfy honors requirements.
V Honors and Writing Intensive. Courses with a V following the course number satisfy both honors and liberal education writing intensive requirements.
W Writing Intensive. Courses with a W following the course number satisfy the writing intensive requirement for liberal education.
cr credit.
1-4 cr [max 6 cr] The course can be taken for 1 to 4 credits and may be repeated for up to 6 credits.
prereq course prerequisites.
prereq listed by number only A prerequisite course listed by number only (e.g., prereq 3105) is in the same discipline as the course being described.
div division.
DGS director of graduate studies.
DUS director of undergraduate studies.
equiv equivalent.
