Abstract
Major forces are driving the rapid evolution of the IS/IT organization. Empirical evidence shows a clear increase in the centralization of decision rights related to information and IT. Anecdotal evidence suggests a need for more involvement of the traditional IT group in enterprise integration, innovation of products/services and processes, and business intelligence. In turn, meeting these increased needs relates to increased standardization, increased centralization of authority, and significant changes in the IS/IT group's resources and capabilities. These changes raise a question about the possible reemergence of the operations research and systems analysis functional specialty of the 50's, 60's and 70's.
